Iconography
of Desire: Kim Jihee Seo Ji-eun
(Curator, Coreana Art & Culture Complex) “…. Desire, a function central to all
human experience, is the desire for nothing nameable. And at the same time this
desire lies at the origin of every variety of animation. If being were only
what it is, there wouldn’t even be room to talk about it. Being comes into
existence as an exact function of this lack. Being attains a sense of self in
relation to being as a function of this lack, in the experience of desire.” –
Jacques Lacan. If one were to pick a keyword that runs through the work of Kim Jihee,
known for her <Sealed Smile> series, it would be ‘desire.’ The dictionary
meaning of desire is ‘the feeling of lack and the desire to have or enjoy
something, or that kind of feeling.’ In other words, desire is also a word that
essentially represents human limitations. The Book of Genesis in the Bible
describes the incident in which Adam and Eve, created in God's image, revealed
their desires for the first time in the human race. At that time, it was a
world without shortages and wants, and everything was allowed, but the one
thing that was not allowed was eating the fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of
Good and Evil. Due to the desire to become like gods, people sinned and were
eventually kicked out of the Garden of Eden, a perfect land. Everything was
allowed, but due to obsession and desire for what one did not have, humans
eventually became beings with no choice but to live with sin and look at their shortcomings. Living in modern society, we pursue money, fame, power, love, happiness,
etc., more than ever before and live a life struggling to have something we
lack. But the vessel of desire is never filled. As Lacan pointed out, the
moment the object of desire comes into our hands, it becomes an illusion, so we
live our lives in constant pursuit of passion. The masterpiece <Sealed Smile>, newly presented in this solo
exhibition Twinkle Twinkle, is a work that seems to be a culmination of the
artist's previous work and, simultaneously, contains the artist's determination
to dream of a new leap forward. Looking at the images filled with this work,
which is about the size of No. 500, one is reminded of a giant mural painted in
a three-dimensional space beyond a two-dimensional painting. In particular, the
opening of the Scrovegni chapel by Giotto di Bondone, a pioneer of Renaissance
painting, comes to mind. Just as the frescoes painted in detail on the walls
and ceiling in a mysterious blue color dominate the space, Ji-hee Kim's large
canvas emits cobalt blue, creating a fantasy of desire on screen. It contains as
many stories as the size of the work. As revealed in the title ‘Sealed Smile’ of the artist’s series that has
been ongoing for over ten years, Kim Jihee’s signature ‘smiling face’ is
located in the center of the screen at an overwhelming size and faces the
viewer in this new work. Her gaze is completely hidden behind the glasses,
surrounded by a gorgeous crown and numerous decorations, just like modern
people who want to hide their true selves to pursue their desires. The corners
of her mouth are slightly raised, revealing only a few teeth covered with
braces between the character's seductive lips. The sealed smile, which can be
said to be fake, as if the person is smiling but has no emotions, and the
braces that are slightly visible between the smile are the characteristics of
the faces Kim Jihee has drawn for a long time and are iconographic images that
contain the message the artist wants to convey. These are the primary devices.
The artist, who has been watching Kim Jihee's work since her college days,
interprets 'desire' within a social context through the process of combining
and transforming these devices, which consistently appear in her work, with
various elements such as sheep's heads, odd eyes, blocked glasses, and crowns.
I discovered the artist's continuous gestures that I wanted to explore. In
addition, we see more clearly that the characters in Kim Jihee's work are none
other than portraits of the crowd living in this society. Let's turn our attention back to the screen of her new work. The cobalt
blue light that forms the background of her work gives a fantastic and hopeful
feeling while also creating a mysterious atmosphere as if it contains anxiety
and depression. Blue is the quietest and most withdrawn color that does not
reveal emotions. In Catholicism and Islam, it has become a symbol of nobility,
nobility, and sanctity; in some eras, it has also become a symbol of wealth.
The artist considers this color to symbolize ‘the boundary between night and
day’ and the boundary point between ‘desire.’ As the artist says, the artist
crosses the boundaries of hope and desire through colors that touch borders
that are difficult to converge into one single thing. What are the numerous decorations embroidered on the background,
including the face's glasses and crown? Gorgeous jewelry and ornaments have
been consistently depicted in her work over the past few years, and in this new
work, she borrows and adds mythological elements. Looking closely at the small
ornaments, you can see delicately drawn mythological figures. These are images
taken from fictitious stories, such as Pygmalion, who fell in love with a
statue and desperately wished for it to become a human being and eventually got
his wish, and Icarus, who symbolizes foolish human desires. Also, floating
among the jewels scattered in the background are images containing various
codes of desire, including animals such as tigers, elephants, dragons, turtles,
and eagles that symbolize good fortune in each culture. Like any idol, these
codes used by the artist have a long tradition of being engraved or decorated
on everyday objects such as blankets and clothes and used to pray for good
fortune. Human beings who want to achieve what they desire find some, even
momentary, comfort through these improbable acts. In the end, even though it
does not even fulfill the desire. The charm
of Kim Jihee's work lies in the point where the exploration of contemporary
themes cleverly intersects with the expressive style created by stacking up to
dozens of layers of pigment with a brush on paper. This is also why the work
never feels light, even though it reveals many pop elements on the surface. The
depth of time and effort put into each layer should never be taken lightly.
Additionally, each of the icons completed through her persistent brushstrokes
may reflect the act of desire itself. The question of how the artist's tenacity
and attitude, which persistently sticks to and explores a subject and technique
in the ever-changing flow of the world, will change and progress in the future,
and what kind of resonance the iconography of future desire drawn by Kim Jihee
can create is what we can expect.
