Kim Jihee <Lucky Strike>: From masked self-portrait to the face of
the other Choi Hyun-jin
(Exhibition Planning, Koohouse Museum) Disguised Self-Portrait When we encounter a ‘smiling face,’ our wariness disappears, and we tend
to view the other person with gentle emotions. This is why we are disarmed and
fascinated when we first encounter Kim Jihee's work. The fresh and lively face
with a big smile captures the eyes and hearts of the viewers and makes them
feel friendly. However, as she soon discovers the braces and realizes that the beautiful
decorations are actual images of expensive consumer goods and brands, the
girl's smile feels awkward, and along with the mysterious expression, she
senses and thinks about the meaning hidden in the unfamiliar canvas. The colorful wigs that cover the original hair are dazzlingly decorated
with products and jewels. The phrases and images projected on the large
sunglass lenses that cover the eyes that reflect the inner self are also
objects that modern people desire to possess and images of appearance that they
pursue depending on the gaze of others. They are icons of desire that dominate
even the innate beauty of youth. The girl's face facing forward is as intense as Yoon Du-seo's
<Self-Portrait>. Still, the painting of the headless face with no visible
eyes and ears is not a portrait depicting the actual appearance of the face but
conceals the face of the body and is formed in a fetishistic society. It can be
said to represent the emotional state of modern people wearing masks adorned
with the desire to become successful. The laughter in the work <Sealed Smile> is a device that disguises
happy emotions promoted by being conscious of the gaze of others. Novelist
Alain de Botton believes that modern people’s ‘status anxiety’ is triggered by
their values seen through the eyes of the world. In his work <Virtual
Camouflage>, he disguises his personality with a ‘sheep’s mask.’ In Kim
Jihee's face, we witness a disguised self-portrait of ourselves that hides our
anxiety. Folk paintings by pop artists Kim Jihee is an artist who majored in oriental painting, and she
fatefully sought the modernization of Korean painting. In the process, she used
traditional color painting techniques. Still, she expressed contemporaneity by
expressing the persona of modern people through a dual mechanism through icons
of consumer society and disguised laughter. She succeeded in obtaining it. As
an artist, she has built her unique world of work, and although she is an
Orientalist painter, she is often called a pop artist and actively communicates
with the world. However, in this exhibition <Lucky Strike>, the artist
paradoxically captured the subject matter of traditional folk paintings on
canvas. The wig, which occupies a significant proportion of the screen, is full
of peonies, fish swimming on the glasses' lenses, and butterflies flying around
them. Folk-tale icons are fluidly placed on the girl's face, with her
exaggerated hair, oversized sunglasses, and braces. Folk paintings of the Joseon Dynasty were famous practical paintings
produced according to folk customs and lifestyles. They were inherited and
developed conventionally according to repetitive formalized patterns rather
than creativity. Animals, plants, and natural objects such as peonies,
butterflies, and fish have their symbolic meanings, such as wealth, fame,
health, longevity, success, and good fortune. Folk paintings reflect the wishes
of ordinary people to encourage auspicious energy and hope for a prosperous
life through these tangible symbols. The artist is examining the spirit of folk painting by embracing folk
painting iconography and the icons she selected for the modern transformation
of her oriental images. The humor and ups and downs of folk painting Bonyu's
humor and ups and downs symbolism are in common with her motivation to deal
with 'desire,' which is the artist's consistent concern. In addition, through
this, we examine the universal and diachronic human desire for the ultimate
value of life rather than the material and visible desire limited to
possessions. Through this reversal, the artist deepened and expanded the theme of
desire. The faces decorated with the undulating icons of folk paintings long
for the inner desires and existence that persist at the base of life rather
than for previous possessions and appearances. Facing the face of the other and making a wish The change in Kim Jihee's attitude toward dealing with desire and deepening
her awareness of the topic seems to be related to her personal history. The
path of going through adolescence with a cynical and acute sense of self,
forming one's own family, and conceiving a new life can be said to be a process
of accepting others. According to philosopher Emmanuel Levinas, the other is an
object of blessing that makes new life and new times possible. The subject is
established in that relationship by facing and accepting the deficient gaze of
the other rather than being wary of it. In this exhibition, the girl is not a subject of desire who disguises
herself by being conscious of the gaze of others but rather a matter who
accepts and embraces the face of others lacking desire. She has developed a
warm eye toward others beyond herself, and it is a gentle statement that takes
a step toward the others she desires rather than hiding from the duality caused
by boundaries. The face that used to be lightly satirized while borrowing
images of the times changed into a bright, warm attitude of hope and desire. In <Lucky Strike>, the girl transformed into a delicate and
feminine person as if she was growing up, becoming more sophisticated but
softer. Although the exaggerated smile has changed into an elegant one, it
still acts. Icons of ups and downs occupy a more significant proportion than
faces, emphasizing laughter. Instead of using vivid, intense, and cheerful
primary colors, the main colors are soft and bright pastel tones, and the
elegant sparkle fills the canvas, adding warmth. In this
exhibition, rather than a double mask to disguise anxiety, we see a warm face
wishing for happiness together. In particular, the production <Lucky
Strike> in a high-end consumption space is expected to communicate with the
viewer by conveying a message about the desires and aspirations that go back
and forth between possession and existence. From masked
self-portrait to the face of the other
